About Valli West

I was born and raised in Santa Fe, NM by a wildly creative and hardworking family. After graduating from Barnard College with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Film, I returned to New Mexico, ultimately settling in the south eastern corner of the state. I make my home in Roswell, NM, balancing my art practice with running a business centered around caring for animals.

In my art, you can see the integration of these two worlds. My work with animals takes me out onto the high plains and prairies, where I photograph extensively, and then I come back into the studio and create my layered, painterly images. I find these works to be nostalgic and somewhat melancholy at times, speaking to memories and lost places and lost time, but they are also grounded in the present and positive everyday life that swirls around us in the form of birds in flight and at rest, and all kinds of critters going about their daily chores, ordered by the seasonal cycles.
